Country music is three chords and the truth. ~Harlan Howard
I wonder if other writers secretly admire country music the way I do. They say so much in so few words. They paint the whole picture in less than a minute, get to the the conflict, and sum up a moral, in two and a half minutes or less. There is always a memorable line you can't get out of your head that you identify with. Even if it's not your life. Like secret country fans, remember--I'm Gonna Hire A Wino To Decorate Our Home..? the rest of the lyric was, ...so you'll feel more at ease here and you won't have to roam.
The well-worn, I'm So Miserable Without You, It's Like Having You Here is one that everyone over the age of three can understand... Then my husband loved this one: How Can I Miss You If You Won't Go Away... so on occassion I would make him miserable with out me...
Well, they aren't all heartbreakers. Some are full of wisdom. There was one that heard years ago that I made a personal theme for an era of my life, You Got To Stand For Something, Or You'll Fall For Anything. My personal theme song these days is,
Cause sometimes that mountain you've been climbing
Is just a grain of sand
And what you've been out there searching for forever
Is in your hands
And when you figure out love is all that matters after all
It sure makes everything else seem
So small
I know. It's corny. But real life is corny. It's not romantic. There's trash to take out, weeds to pull and dog poop to pick up... There really aren't many of those halcyon days, except when you're remembering them. Realizing that you didn't know how good you had it then...
Of course there's Waylon's classic, Mama's, Don't Let Your Baby's Grow Up To Be Cowboys... I love the version he does with Willie Nelson, they're so sweet together. But there is a song that tops it, Save A Horse, Ride A Cowbow.... if I can figure out how to attach a couple of music files I'll put them on later. Oprah is on for the second time, so it's my bed time... nighty night.
